Swimming Pool History

In the 3rd millennium BC the "great bath" of Mohenjo-Daro was dug. This 12 by 7 meter pool was lines with bricks covered with a tar-based sealant.

In Ancient Greece, Romans built pools for their athletes to train for games and military exercises. The Roman emperors often had private pools made for them where they were know to keep fish. Pools were started to be heated in the first century BC by Gaius Maecenas who was also a rich Roman Lord.

  • 1837 - Around the 19th century swimming pools started to become popular in Britain and by 1837 you could start to see diving boards appear.
  • 1896 - Swimming races became an olympic sport
  • 1869 - The Amateur Swimming Association is founded in England
  • 1909 - The Oxford Swimming Club was founded
  • 1939 - First public pool in Oxford at Temple Cowley
  • 1907 - The world's first modern above ground swimming pools ins built at the Racquet Club of Philadelphia
  • 1907 - The world's first swimming pool to be on an ocean line installed on the White Star Line's Adriatic
  • 1915 - The oldest concrete swimming pool was built in Texas

After World War II home swimming pools became popular in the USA.
